Thriving Kids Data Roadmap
Reliable, accessible data is key
To support every child in every community according to their needs, we need the right information.
Between us all we know a lot about how Queensland children are doing, what’s working and what’s not. However, our systems haven’t always been geared to manage this information and to get it to the right people to make the best decisions for children.
Collecting, managing, sharing and using data is a skillset that we can all improve.
Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership is supporting Queenslanders to:
- map the data we already have
- fill gaps in our child wellbeing knowledge
- access, interpret, manage and share existing data
- exchange knowledge and learning
- take action and make good decisions
- measure outcomes together.
Towards thriving
This initiative is supporting the health and development of Queensland’s children by … increasing access to, and use of, data and shared frameworks by communities, investors, providers and decision-makers.
Working together
This initiative is facilitated by Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership with key partners and collaborators including place-based backbone leaders Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS), InfoXchange, SEER, NEXUS Foundation Partner, Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC), Children’s Health Queensland, Health and Wellbeing Queensland, University of Queensland, QUT and Griffith University.
“Improving child and youth wellbeing requires a more systematic approach to putting data, insights, learnings, and expertise to work.”
System Leadership for Child and Youth Wellbeing Report
What we're already achieving..
Together with our partners, we’ve:
- Set up the Thriving Places Data Working Group
- Produced the Thriving Kids Data Roadmap (2021)
- Co-designed the Thriving Places, Thriving Kids Data Framework (2023)
- Influenced the QFCC’s Growing Up in Queensland Data Explorer
- Engaged with the Australian Child and Youth Wellbeing Atlas data portal
- Aligned information with the ARACY wellbeing domains
- Supported organisations to manage their data
- Created a framework for managing information about Queensland’s children that includes Population Data, Community Data, Service Data and Research Data

The vision is for Queensland to have the data and tools to support those of us working on place-based initiatives to:
- strengthen data capacity and capability
- access, interpret and share data
- exchange knowledge and learning
- take action and make good decisions
- measure outcomes together.

How you can get involved

Place-Based Data Framework (2024)
Place based leaders and data experts have created a framework that is not only focused on data access, but guides practitioners in the ‘how to’ of accessing, collecting and using data for the purpose of shared measurement and shared decision-making.

Framing With Data
When framed effectively, a compelling statistic can help people understand a topic more deeply. But too often, public health communicators use data in ways that fall flat or send messages we don’t intend. Here are some guidelines from the FrameWorks Institute to keep in mind when you’re using numbers.

Key data projects linked to this initiative
As part of this initiative, Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership continues to support the development of data platforms at state and federal levels including the following.
Data Catalyst Network – A national network of approximately 50 organisations working with data from the not-for-profit community sector, academia, government and business to improve the lives of people across the whole of Australia.

QFCC Data Explorer – A free online resource that presents a picture of child and family wellbeing in Queensland, based on the QFCC’s Growing Up in Queensland report.

Australian Child and Youth Wellbeing Atlas – A freely available data asset that maps information on children and young people aged 0 to 24 in communities across Australia.
