Research & Evaluation Network: Using framing for impactful storytelling about children and young people in research

Data is essential for informing policy and practice, but its impact depends on how it’s presented. The way we frame data can either reinforce limiting narratives or create opportunities for change, making framing a powerful tool for shaping how we understand and respond to issues affecting children and young people.

Join us on Thursday, 6 November, from 10am to 11am to explore how framing can support ethical, inclusive, and impactful storytelling in research and evaluation.

Our guest speakers include:

Naomi Brown, Principal Partnerships Manager – Framing Initiative at the Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership (TQKP), working closely with the FrameWorks Institute, will share evidence-based framing strategies used to support practitioners, leaders, and researchers to communicate effectively and build public support for children and young people to thrive.

Associate Professor Angela Higginson from QUT’s School of Justice will share insights from the Australian Youth Safety Survey and discuss how framing influences every stage of the research lifecycle – from conceptualisation to impact.

In the session, you’ll:

  • Understand the principles of strategic framing and why it matters
  • Learn how framing influences research design, analysis, and communication
  • Explore practical tools and mindset shifts for framing data
  • See real-world examples from youth safety research and framing initiatives.
