Building the conditions for children and families to thrive
Children do best when the people, places and supports around them work together. When we invest in families and communities, we’re building the foundations for Queensland’s future.
That’s why it’s so encouraging to see the Raising Queensland campaign — led by QCOSS and a coalition of organisations — bringing together a shared call to action for children and families across the state.
It reflects a growing understanding that creating better outcomes isn’t about one service or one system alone. It’s about how we work together to shape the environments around families.
At its heart are six practical ways governments can strengthen that support.
Six ways governments can support Queensland families and children
Develop a Families strategy
Create one clear, shared plan across government so services like health, education and housing are working together. This helps make support more connected, easier to navigate and guided by what families need.
Focus on secure housing for families
Make sure every family with children has a safe, stable place to live. Secure housing gives children the foundation they need to grow, learn and feel settled.
Ensure all kids are learning
Support schools to work closely with families and communities, with flexible and inclusive approaches that help every child stay engaged in learning.
Improve access to health services
Make it easier for children and families to get the care they need, when and where they need it — including mental health support and services connected to schools and communities.
Increase income support
Ensure families can afford the basics of daily life, so children can grow up in stable and supportive environments.
Invest in community services that deliver for local communities
Support and strengthen local services that families know and trust, so help is available early and close to home, where relationships can grow.
This is a strong example of what it looks like to focus on solutions and shared responsibility.
By aligning efforts across government, communities and services, Queensland has a real opportunity to build a system that works around families — so children and young people can grow up safe, supported and able to thrive.
